Question of the Week

Does the new constitutional amendment on property taxes provide any savings if I sold my homesteaded property last year and purchased another homestead in 2007. If so, is there a deadline for me to file for my tax savings?

Yes. The new amendment allows a homeowner to "port" up to $500,000 of homestead savings to a new homesteaded. The deadline is March 1, 2008, for a homeowner to file for homestead with the property appraisers office, and to file for portability of the Save our Homes benefit with the property appraiser's office where the new property is located.
